To be eligible to undertake a research degree (MSc or PhD) you will need to have completed a four year degree in Physics or a related discipline (eg Engineering) and this must have included a research project.

An approved candidate shall be enrolled in one of the following categories:
(a) full-time attendance at the University;
(b) part-time attendance at the University;
(c) external - not in regular attendance at the University and using research facilities external to the University.
This is the main Masters level research program for postgraduate students in the Faculty of Medicine. Candidates must demonstrate ability to undertake research by the submission of a thesis embodying the results of an original investigation. The program may be undertaken either with or without supervision.
1) A minimum of 3 years mining experience in a responsible position AND a Deputy’s certificate, Undermanager’s certificate or Mine Manager’s certificate, or Mine Surveyor's certificate.
Or
2) A 3 or 4 year degree in Mining Engineering with a credit average in the last 2 years of the degree AND at least 1 year experience in underground in coal or metal mining.
Or
3) A 3 or 4 year degree in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (with a credit average in the last 2 years of the degree) AND at least 2 year experience in underground in coal or metal mining.
Or
4) by written permission of the Program Authority.
This program provides professional development in mine ventilation and mine environment monitoring for mining engineers and other mining personnel. It is delivered in a distant, flexible format. The Diploma is structured to meet the needs of both the metalliferous and coal mining sectors. The accredited programs offered by UNSW for the appointment of Statutory Coal Mine Ventilation Officers in both NSW and Qld can be taken as options in the Diploma. The course contents have been developed from standard texts, industry guidelines and case studies. These are delivered from both a theoretical and operational perspective with the aim that course contents will be immediately relevant to industry. As this is a professional development course, it is essential that the student has access to a mine site with the support of industry. It is preferable that the student is working at a mine site. Assessments are geared to practical evaluation of mine ventilation systems.
Entry requires a 4 year (Honours) degree in Mining Engineering or a cognate discipline from a recognised institution, or satisfying the requirements of the UNSW Graduate Diploma in Mining Engineering (MINE5040FS and from 2015: MINE5335) with a minimum WAM of 65% and no course fails.
The Master of Mining Engineering will be awarded after successful completion of 72 Units of Credit points of coursework, either full time or part time. A majority of the courses will be offered as modules over a short block period to permit employees of mining companies and associated service providers to attend on a part-time basis. Please note that some electives may only be offered every two years
The School of Mining Engineering offers a Graduate Certificate in Mining Engineering to allow a more flexible entry mode for applicants who have limited tertiary qualifications. Admission will be considered on an individual basis - plese refer to the Frequently Asked Questions on the School of Mining Engineering website. Students may be eligible to upgrade to a Graduate Diploma depending upon satisfactory academic progress. This usually requires maintaining at least a credit average in each course attempted. Please note that some electives may be offered only every two years.
?A candidate for the degree shall have been awarded an appropriate degree of Bachelor with Honours from the University of New South Wales or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution at a level acceptable to the Research Committee of the appropriate Faculty.
?Candidates may be admitted to the PhD program after one year’s full-time enrolment in a Masters by Research program, with the approval of the Faculty Postgraduate Affairs Committee.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree is offered in all faculties of the University of New South Wales and encourages initiative and originality in research. Candidates should make a significant contribution to knowledge in their field.
Entry to the Graduate Diploma program requires a 3 year degree in Mining Engineering or related cognate discipline (3 or 4 years) from a recognised institution, or satisfying the requirements of the UNSW Graduate Certificate in Mining Engineering with a minimum WAM of 65% and no course fails, or with permission from the Head of School or Director of Postgraduate Studies (Coursework)
The Graduate Diploma of Mining Engineering will be awarded after successful completion of 48 Units of Credit points of coursework, either full time or part time. A majority of the courses will be offered as modules over a short block period to permit employees of mining companies and associated service providers to attend on a part-time basis. Please note that some electives may only be offered every two years.
The Master of Music by Research degree program involves the completion of three courses and a research thesis or project. The degree is completed in four sessions (full-time). It is designed for students wishing to engage in serious research but not able to devote the three years required to complete a PhD or with a research project which does not lend itself to that level of extended treatment. Clear indication of potential to undertake research is required, either through a relevant Honours degree or through a period of professional work following a relevant undergraduate degree.
