The programme is offered by the Centre for Applied Language Research. Staff contributing to the programme are involved in the direct teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL) and other languages, research and development work in applied linguistics and language learning, as well as sociolinguistics and cultural studies. This blend of theoretical expertise and ongoing practical experience is one of the distinguishing features of our programme.

This programme provides a focused route for new English language professionals who wish to develop advanced knowledge and skills in the English language curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. You will study contemporary approaches to curriculum, assessment and pedagogy, with opportunities to follow specialist interests, such as learner autonomy and English as an international language. You will develop a deeper understanding of the theory and practice of English language teaching and gain the skills required to challenge current professional practice, to innovate, and to undertake a range of leadership roles in English language teaching.

The MA is a specialist programme that allows you to focus in literature, culture and thought in the long twentieth century. The programme is closelylinked to the Centre for Contemporary Writing at the University of Southampton. The MA can be used as professional training, or as preparation for PhD study at Southampton and elsewhere. Students in our programme benefit from small-group teaching with world-leading experts in modern and contemporary literature; creative writing; postcolonial studies; literature and science; poetics; and literature and law.

Creative Writing modules are taught by practicing writers, and focus on your own creative writing while engaging in close study of contemporary work. Faculty and fellow students at Southampton come from all over the world -including India, Columbia, Pakistan, Iceland, the USA, Nigeria, and of course the UK -bringing a wide range of experiences and writing traditions, and giving our programmes an international focus. Students take part in a lively programme of literary events, including our own 'Writers in Conversation held at Nuffield Theatre, on a campus that includes a professional art gallery, a concert hall, and a world-renowned theatre.

The MA allows you to specialise in the history and the visual and material culture, as well as the writing of the period. You will be introduced to the literary, political, philosophical and cultural issues of 18th-century Britain through options that explore the rise of the novel, gender and the social order, race and empire, the consumer revolution, modernity, and analyses of art, taste, gender, and politeness. The MA encourages students to work across disciplines and to use archival sources.

The MA in English Literary Studies will enable you to work independently in the field, to explore a range of periods and genres of English literature and culture as well as creative writing, and to evaluate unique archival resources. it will develop your knowledge and understanding of critical and research methods, the historical and critical reception of literature in designated areas and literature in a contested cultural framework.
