Hello.
In May of last year, you reported on a story involving Fu Duan, an international Chinese exchange student driving a Ferrari who was killed by a an intoxicated driver.
Given that it’s been one year since his passing, I’d like to offer you a different perspective. Fu was one of my students when I taught at Pasadena City College and left a lasting impression upon me. I’ve prepared the below for you to consider sharing with your readers.
Thanks,
Bennet Tchaikovsky
It’s been a little more than a year now since Fu Duan, an international exchange student, passed away in an accident involving a brand new Ferrari. Many people felt that Fu was an example of an international exchange student gone wild. I wanted to take a few moments to share my experience.
Fu was one my accounting students in the Spring Semester of 2014 and his passing happened a few days prior to the final exam. With the over 200 students that I teach every semester, getting to know my students can be a challenging endeavor. However, Fu was different.
After looking at his midterm grade online and realizing that he was receiving a ‘B’ in the course during mid-terms, he contacted me and asked me what it would take to get an ‘A ‘in the course. He studied diligently and received a perfect scores on the fifth exam raising his grade to an ‘A’ heading into the final exam. Fu never got the chance to take the final exam, however, the impression that he has left upon me will last forever.
When we challenged my 9 year old son to achieve certain grades on his report card in order to go on a trip and he failed to achieve the goal, like most parents today, I thought that I should somehow give him another chance. After reflecting, I decided not to let him take the trip. Rather, I shared with him the story of Fu Duan and the dedication that is required to succeed.
Thank you Fu, for making such an impression on my life.
